#TGMA27: Black Sherif wins Artiste of the Year

Black Sherif won the top honour at the 27th Telecel Ghana Music Awards on Saturday, securing the Artiste of the Year title for the second time in his career after a dominant year driven by the success of his sophomore album Iron Boy.
The 24-year-old performer, born Mohammed Ismail Sherif, picked up five awards during the ceremony held at the Grand Arena in Accra, including Album/EP of the Year for Iron Boy, Songwriter of the Year for “Sacrifice”, Best Hiphop Song for “Where Dem Boys” and Best Afropop Song for “Sacrifice”.
His victory placed him among a select group of Ghanaian musicians to win the industry’s biggest award multiple times, following his first triumph in 2023.
The competition for the night’s biggest prize was closely watched, with rapper Medikal emerging as Black Sherif’s strongest challenger after winning four awards on the night.
Other nominees in the Artiste of the Year category included Stonebwoy, Wendy Shay, Sarkodie and Diana Hamilton.
Released in April 2025, Iron Boy achieved commercial success locally and internationally, blending drill, highlife and introspective lyricism that resonated strongly with younger audiences.
The project also helped strengthen Black Sherif’s international profile through festival appearances and streaming success across digital platforms.
Speaking after receiving the award, Black Sherif dedicated the win to his hometown, Konongo, and to young people striving to succeed despite economic hardship.
The annual Telecel Ghana Music Awards is regarded as Ghana’s most prestigious music awards platform, recognising achievements across multiple genres in the country’s music industry.
