Man arrested after alleged attempt to steal police armoured vehicle

A 26-year-old man, identified as Ebenezer Frimpong, is in police custody after allegedly attempting to steal an armoured vehicle belonging to the Ghana Police Service in Nkawie, within the Atwima Nwabiagya South Municipality of the Ashanti Region.
The incident reportedly occurred around 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, when a service driver, Lance Corporal Joshua Denkyi of the Formed Police Unit (FPU), was conveying the vehicle—registered GP 1131—from Nkawie to the Regional Police Workshop in Kumasi for routine maintenance.
According to police accounts, the officer briefly stopped near the Nkawie Market to purchase medication from a nearby pharmacy, leaving the vehicle’s engine running. During that interval, Frimpong, who was reportedly passing by, allegedly entered the vehicle and drove off, catching the officer and nearby witnesses off guard.
An alert was quickly issued, prompting a swift response from the Ashanti Regional Police Command. A SWAT team, led by Inspector Benjamin Nartey and made up of seven officers, was deployed to pursue and intercept the vehicle.
After an intense chase lasting about 30 minutes along the Abuakwa–Kumasi stretch, the suspect was apprehended at Mim, near Abuakwa.
The stolen armoured vehicle has since been recovered and secured as evidence. Frimpong is currently being held at the Abuakwa District Police Command and has been transferred to the Ashanti Regional Criminal Investigations Department for further questioning and investigations.
