Ketu: Police impound 58 motorbikes in road safety opeartion

The Ketu Divisional Police Command has impounded 58 motorbikes in a special operation aimed at enforcing road traffic regulations and improving road safety.

The exercise, led by the Ketu Divisional Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Alfred Kudah, targeted several violations among motorbike riders. 

These included riding without crash helmets, use of unregistered motorbikes, absence of side mirrors, and carrying more than one pillion passenger.

Police also detected the use of unapproved lighting systems on some motorbikes, which they said posed danger to other road users. The illegal lights were removed on the spot, while the affected riders are expected to face prosecution for other offences.

The Command warned that offences such as the use of unapproved lights and sirens, as well as riding on road shoulders, are not limited to motorbike riders but apply to all motorists, adding that strict enforcement would continue.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency, ACP Kudah said the rising incidence of motorbike-related crashes in the area had become a major concern, necessitating sustained enforcement actions.

He said the operation forms part of broader efforts to reduce motorbike accidents within the Ketu South Municipality.

“The rate at which motorbike accidents are increasing is worrying, and we cannot remain unconcerned. That is why we are intensifying enforcement to ensure compliance,” he said.

He added that riders and individuals who claimed ownership of the impounded motorbikes have been processed and are expected to appear before the Tokor Circuit Court on Monday, June 29, 2026, at 0800 hours.

ACP Kudah urged all road users to strictly adhere to traffic regulations to safeguard lives and prevent avoidable accidents.

He further indicated that the operation will be sustained, with similar exercises expected at least once every two weeks until compliance improves significantly.

The Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to road safety and called on the public to support enforcement efforts by complying with traffic regulations.
