Community nurses to receive medical backpacks under Free Primary Healthcare initiative

The Ministry of Health has introduced a new set of medical kits, including specially designed red backpacks, to support community health nurses under the government’s Free Primary Healthcare programme.

Dr. Grace Ayensu-Danquah, Deputy Minister of Health, has explained that the initiative is aimed at improving the visibility and efficiency of nurses delivering care at the community level.

According to the Deputy Minister, each backpack contains essential tools such as a weighing scale, blood pressure monitor, glucometer, flashlight, and a raincoat—items needed to support frontline healthcare delivery.

Dr Grace Ayensu-Danquah, Deputy Minister of Health, noted that the provision of these tools will enhance early detection of conditions such as hypertension and diabetes, helping to reduce the burden on referral hospitals.

She added that early diagnosis will help ease congestion and shorten waiting times at higher-level health facilities.

On security, Dr Grace Ayensu-Danquah, stated that nurses will carry identification cards and will be formally introduced to community leaders before deployment.

She further indicated that community health nursing is already part of Ghana’s health system, with the new kits serving to strengthen existing services.

The Free Primary Healthcare programme, launched on April 15, is currently being piloted in 150 districts nationwide, with health kiosks also being set up in public spaces such as markets and lorry stations to improve access to care.
