Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has said the New Patriotic Party (NPP) could have its next opportunity to return to government in 2032.
Speaking on Morning Starr on Starr FM, Mr Kpebu argued that Ghana’s political history suggests an eight-year cycle between the country’s two major political parties.
According to him, the current political situation makes an NPP return to power in the next four years unlikely.
He said even if he becomes dissatisfied with the performance of the current administration, that would not necessarily lead him to support the NPP or its flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, in the next election.
“Worst case, if I’m not happy with them, I won’t go and vote. But I cannot turn around in four years and go and vote for Bawumia. I don’t know how I can support Bawumia in four years,” he said.
Mr Kpebu maintained that, based on the political cycle he was describing, the NPP’s next realistic opportunity to return to government could be in 2032.
“So what the argument I’m building is that if anything at all, the NPP’s chance to really return will be 2032,” he said.
Rejects Claims of Political Motivation
Mr Kpebu also rejected suggestions that his engagements with political actors are motivated by personal financial benefits.
He cited his involvement in the ORA report, saying he and others who worked on it received no payment and covered expenses such as fuel and water themselves.
“And for the records, the ORA report, we didn’t take one cedi. One cedi, even fuel, we didn’t take. We went to work with our own fuel, water, etc. We didn’t take one cedi,” he said.
He questioned why he would wait several years for an opposition leader to potentially return to power if his objective were to seek assistance or opportunities, arguing that he could instead engage the administration currently in office.
Mr Kpebu’s comments reflect his personal assessment of Ghana’s political cycle and should not be interpreted as a forecast or official position of the NPP.
