NPP race: I was offered US$800m to step down – Kennedy Agyapong
Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, a flagbearer candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has reacted to allegations made by Frederick Opare-Ansah, a former member of parliament for Suhum, that he demanded $500 million in annual contracts from Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in exchange for resigning from his candidacy.
In a Sunday, October 29, 2023, interview with Time FM, Ken Agyapong denied the claim but instead claimed he was given an offer of $800 million to withdraw from the party’s campaign for Dr. Bawumia.
“Does he know the number of people who have approached me but for the love of Ghana and the delegates I have said I will never do it.
“The money they offered is $800 million if he doesn’t know. He should ask Mr Oppong Bio, if that is what they are saying but I said no I will not step down, Ghana first.
“In 2016, you people were not able to buy pickups. How come today you are able to offer me $800 million? So I said I won’t step down…” he stated.
In a media tirade, Opare-Ansah attacked Kennedy Agyapong, accusing him of being resentful and saying that he chose to run for flagbearership in order to get even with Dr. Bawumia after the vice president denied his request, which was a requirement in order to gain his support.
Ken Agyapong claims that he is steadfast in his quest of the president and that his choice to run was motivated only by the interest of the public.
The NPP will elect a flagbearer on November 4, 2023, ahead of next year’s presidential election.
