WBI Commissions Health Kiosk in Adidome to Strengthen Preventive Healthcare

The Wellness Bridge Initiative (WBI) has commissioned a community health kiosk in Adidome, the capital of Central Tongu District in the Volta Region, as part of efforts to promote preventive healthcare and combat the rising incidence of non-communicable diseases.

The facility, situated at the Fiagbenu Triangle, will provide free health checks, including blood pressure, blood sugar and Body Mass Index (BMI) screening, as well as lifestyle education to encourage early detection of chronic conditions.

Mr. Baba Awuni, Central Tongu District Health Director, described the kiosk as a “game changer” in community health monitoring.

He said the initiative would facilitate timely referrals to the Adidome District Hospital and reduce the burden of late-stage hypertension and diabetes cases that were straining the health system.

The commissioning ceremony, chaired by Dr. Elikplim Kwabla Apetorgbor, Volta Region’s Representative to the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC), attracted chiefs, queen mothers, assembly members, health officials and residents of Adidome.

Dr. Apetorgbor lauded the initiative as “bold and visionary,” commending Togbe Kwasinyi Kakaklolo Agyeman V, the Dufia of Adidome and Founding Chief Executive Officer of WBI, for pioneering the project.

He said the kiosk exemplified how traditional leadership could drive people-centred development, linking good health to productivity and national progress.

“This kiosk is more than a structure; it is a spark of transformation. Let us light such small fires across our communities until the entire region glows with development,” Dr. Apetorgbor stated.

Togbe Agyeman described the project as “a candle of hope,” explaining that it was inspired by personal loss and a vision to save lives through early detection.

He said funerals labelled “Gone Too Soon” were becoming common in the district due to preventable complications of hypertension and diabetes.

The project, he said, would be rolled out nationwide to foster healthier lifestyles in alignment with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3 on good health and well-being.

This he said would include health education campaigns, free screenings, promotion of local dietary literacy and community fitness programmes.

The Ghana Health Service (Central Tongu Directorate) will train and supervise attendants at the kiosk, while referrals will be channelled to the district hospital.

Stakeholders including Mr Dodzi Addison Mornyuie, the District Chief Executive, joined in endorsing the initiative and called for collaborative support from government, philanthropists and corporate bodies to sustain and replicate it nationwide.

Recent health statistics indicate that Central Tongu has recorded a rise in new hypertension cases over the past year, while diabetes cases surged by more than 80 per cent in the first half of 2025 compared to the previous year.

Officials believe the kiosk will play a vital role in reversing these worrying trends.

The launch concluded with free medical screenings for residents, who expressed gratitude to WBI and the traditional authorities for bringing healthcare closer to the people.
