Captain Smart Resigns from Onua TV to Contest Gomoa West Parliamentary Seat
Popular Ghanaian broadcaster Blessed Godsbrain Smart, popularly known as Captain Smart, has announced his resignation from Media General, bringing his five years with the media company to an end.
Captain Smart made the announcement live on air during his Onua Maakye programme on Friday, August 7, 2026, leaving many of his listeners and followers surprised.
Mr. Smart, who joined Media General on June 1, 2021, disclosed that he had formally tendered his resignation and was ready to pursue other endeavours.
In a dramatic moment during the programme, Captain Smart called on the staff member responsible for attaching his microphone to come and remove it, signalling what appeared to be his final moments on the station.
“I want to withdraw. I have officially resigned. This isn’t going to be the case where I will come back again. The bosses here may not agree, but I have done my part. I want the man who mic’d me to come and take off my microphone on air,” he said.
Captain Smart subsequently expressed appreciation to his colleagues, supporters and listeners who had followed his work throughout his time at Media General.
“I came to Media General on June 1, 2021, but today ends my stay here. Thanks to everyone who listened to me,” he stated.
The broadcaster also offered an indication of what may have influenced his decision to leave the company, pointing to his political ambitions.
According to Captain Smart, his decision is linked to his intention to contest the Gomoa West parliamentary seat on the ticket of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
He suggested that the call to enter active politics was one he could not ignore, signalling a possible transition from broadcasting into partisan politics.
His resignation marks the end of a significant chapter in Captain Smart’s broadcasting career and is expected to generate further discussions about his next move, particularly his reported plans to seek political office.
