Burkina Faso to lift suspension of fresh tomato exports to Ghana

Burkina Faso is set to resume fresh tomato exports to Ghana, following a suspension imposed on March 16, 2026, to secure local supply for processing factories.
The decision, announced by the Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, is a result of successful bilateral engagements between Ghana and Burkina Faso, led by Trade Minister Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare.
The suspension had caused concerns among Ghanaian traders and consumers, given the country’s heavy reliance on tomato imports from Burkina Faso, with estimates indicating Ghana spends around $100 million annually on these imports.
The lifting of the ban is expected to ease supply pressures and stabilize market prices.Ghana’s government has welcomed the move, emphasizing its commitment to boosting local tomato production through initiatives like Feed the Industry and Feed Ghana.
These programs aim to improve yields, ensure consistent supply, and promote sustainable agricultural development. The Ministry has urged tomato traders and stakeholders to support government interventions aimed at protecting local industry and maintaining market stability.
