Task Force Probes Mysterious Fish Deaths at Tema Shipyard

A joint task force has launched investigations into a sudden and unexplained mass fish death incident at the Tema Shipyard, raising concerns among authorities and the public.
The development, available to the media, was first detected in the early hours of April 6, 2026, between 5:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m., when security personnel observed a large number of dead fish floating within an estimated 50-metre radius of the shipyard’s main unloading area.
In response, a joint investigative team comprising the Food and Drugs Authority, Fisheries Commission, Tema Metropolitan Assembly, and the Criminal Investigations Department was immediately constituted to probe the incident.
Authorities say the affected area has since been secured, with a rapid-response team—including FDA inspectors, police officers, and port officials—deployed to assess the situation and prevent further risk.
Although the exact cause of the fish deaths remains unknown, officials have indicated that the matter is being treated with urgency.
As part of the investigation, between 60 and 80 fish samples, along with several water samples, have been collected under strict procedures and sent for laboratory analysis.
These tests are expected to determine whether environmental pollution, chemical contamination, or other factors may have contributed to the incident.
Authorities have, however, stated that there is currently no evidence of deliberate sabotage or any immediate large-scale public health threat.
In the meantime, the task force has issued a public warning, urging residents and the general public to avoid harvesting, buying, or consuming fish and seafood from the affected area until further notice.
Consumers are advised that fish sourced from approved cold-chain markets outside the affected zone remains safe if properly cooked.
Additionally, the public has been encouraged to report any sightings of dead or distressed fish to the FDA, while individuals who may have consumed fish from the area and experience symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, or dizziness are urged to seek immediate medical attention.
The incident has sparked concern about possible environmental hazards in the Tema industrial enclave, with experts expected to closely monitor findings from the ongoing investigations.
Authorities say results from laboratory tests will guide further action, including any necessary interventions to protect marine life and public health.
Until then, the joint task force continues its work, as officials reassure the public of their commitment to uncovering the cause of the incident and preventing any recurrence.
