Sedina Tamakloe Released From Custody Two Weeks After Court of Appeal Acquittal
Former Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC) Chief Executive Officer, Sedina Christine Tamakloe-Attionu, has reportedly been released from custody, nearly two weeks after the Court of Appeal overturned her conviction and 10-year prison sentence.
Tamakloe-Attionu was unanimously acquitted and discharged by a three-member panel of the Court of Appeal on July 30, 2026. The court held that the prosecution had failed to prove its case beyond reasonable doubt and subsequently set aside the convictions entered against her by the High Court.
Her release follows a dramatic turn in a case that has attracted significant public attention. She had returned to Ghana on June 9, 2026, following her extradition from the United States and was subsequently taken into custody to serve a 10-year sentence imposed after her conviction in absentia. She began serving the sentence at the Nsawam Medium Security Female Prison on June 24.
The former MASLOC boss had been convicted on multiple charges arising from alleged financial offences during her tenure at the institution. Her appeal challenged both the conviction and aspects of the trial, with her lawyers arguing that the prosecution had failed to establish the charges against her to the required legal standard.
In its ruling, the Court of Appeal criticised aspects of the trial court’s approach and emphasised the constitutional principle that an accused person is presumed innocent until proven guilty. The court’s detailed reasons were contained in a 94-page judgment.
However, the legal battle may not yet be over. Following the acquittal, the Attorney-General directed the Director of Public Prosecutions to file a notice of appeal at the Supreme Court and also seek a stay of execution of the Court of Appeal’s judgment pending determination of the case.
The latest development in Tamakloe-Attionu’s case is therefore expected to attract further public and legal attention as the government considers its next steps.
