Moving the National Cathedral doesn’t address the real issue – Kwesi Pratt
Ghanaian journalist Kwesi Pratt has expressed reservations about President Mahama’s proposal to relocate the National Cathedral project as a possible solution to its controversy.
Pratt maintained that the opposition to the cathedral was not based on its location but on broader principles tied to Ghana’s secular identity while speaking on Good Morning Ghana monitored by MyNewsGH.
“The people who opposed the building of the cathedral did not oppose it because it was being built in the Ridge area. So, if you move the project to Kumasi, Lapaz, or even Tamale, it hasn’t changed the argument at all,” Pratt argued.
He further critiqued the suggestion, describing it as inadequate. “The president suggesting that in the future it may not be built on that site really does not address the question,” he said.
Pratt reiterated his discomfort with the president’s broader comments, especially regarding the potential involvement of the state in facilitating the project.
“I was a bit disappointed when I heard those suggestions.
“The argument against the cathedral is not about where it is built but the principle of a secular state constructing a religious monument,” he noted.
