“I Make Music I Like” — Rema Fires Back at Critics of His Music

Nigerian Afrobeats sensation Divine Ikubor, popularly known as Rema, has sparked fresh conversation about the future of Afrobeats after making a bold statement about artistic freedom and the evolution of the genre.

Speaking at his concert over the weekend, the global hitmaker explained that he does not make music solely based on what fans expect from him. According to Rema, his creative process begins with making music that he personally enjoys before asking whether audiences will embrace it.

The singer went further to describe himself as the Prince of Afrobeats, saying he believes he has a responsibility to push the genre beyond its current boundaries.

“I don’t care what you say about me. I don’t care if you like what I like. But I make music that I like before you like it,” Rema said.

He argued that constantly producing music based on existing Afrobeats expectations could prevent the genre from evolving.

Rema’s comments come at a time when some African music fans have criticised the growing influence of international sounds on Afrobeats. Critics have expressed concerns that some artistes are moving away from the traditional elements of the genre in an effort to appeal to wider global audiences.

However, Rema appears to view experimentation differently. For him, pushing boundaries and introducing new sounds is part of how Afrobeats can continue to grow and compete on the global stage.
