Heavy downpour and windstorm cause flooding in Dzelukope and Keta

Residents of Dzelukope and Keta woke up to intense rainfall this morning, which quickly led to flooding in several low-lying communities, including Agorte and Gobah Beach.

The heavy rains, which began in the early hours, overwhelmed drainage systems in some areas, leaving streets waterlogged and homes at risk. Alongside the rainfall, a strong windstorm swept through parts of the coastal enclave, further compounding the situation and raising concerns over possible damage to structures and livelihoods.

Eyewitnesses in Agorte said water levels rose rapidly, making movement difficult for pedestrians and motorists. At Gobah Beach, the combination of rain and wind disrupted daily activities, with some residents reporting water entering their compounds.

Local authorities have been alerted, and our reporting team is preparing to visit the affected areas to assess the full extent of the impact on property, infrastructure, and residents’ safety. The assessment will also look at immediate needs such as shelter, drainage clearance, and any disruptions to transport and commerce along the coastline.

No casualties have been confirmed at this time, but the situation remains under monitoring. Meteorologists have cautioned that similar weather patterns could persist in the coming hours, urging residents to remain vigilant and avoid flood-prone areas.

Both Dzelukope and Keta are coastal towns in the Volta Region that are frequently vulnerable to seasonal rains and tidal surges. Community leaders have in the past called for improved drainage and coastal protection measures to mitigate recurring flood risks.

Further updates will be shared as more information becomes available from the ongoing assessments.
