Distributing tablets when students study under tress does not make sense – Fred Agbenyo

A member of the National Democratic Congress Communications team, Fred Agbenyo has questioned the rationale behind government’s distribution of tablets to Senior High School students.

The President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo launched the ‘Ghana Smart Schools Project’ on Monday March 25, 2024.

As part of the initiative, each Senior High School student is expected to have access to a tablet that has learning materials uploaded on it.

The initiative aims to bolster Senior High School education by providing teaching and learning management systems, digital learning content, and electronic devices to all SHS and TVET schools nationwide.

Speaking at the event, the president said 1.3 million Senior High School (SHS) students nationwide will benefit from the programme.

But Fred Agbenyo believes that Ghana got it wrong with this initiative.

He is of the view that focus should rather be placed on getting the fundamentals right in Ghana’s education sector.

“I don’t know the last time you travelled out of this country. Our students are still studying under trees, our students do not have furniture, they do not have tables and chairs in the classrooms. So when these are not in place and you go and give them a tablet, I’m not saying it is not good but I’m saying that get the fundamentals right,” he said.
