Afenyo-Markin: National Cathedral Could Become Ghana’s Biggest Tourist Attraction

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has renewed calls for the completion of Ghana’s National Cathedral, arguing that the project could become a major tourism attraction and a national landmark.
Speaking at an engagement with the Christian Council on October 6, 2026, Mr Afenyo-Markin said the facility should not be viewed solely as a place of worship, but as a national asset capable of attracting visitors and enhancing Ghana’s image.
“This National Cathedral, we need it as a nation. It shouldn’t be too simplistic that cathedral is just for prayer. It is also for tourism,” he said.
He cited an old mosque in Türkiye which, according to him, attracts about 4,000 visitors daily because of its historical and architectural significance.
Mr Afenyo-Markin said a completed National Cathedral could similarly attract tourists, serve as a rallying point for Ghanaians and contribute to the country’s tourism potential.
His comments come amid renewed uncertainty over the future of the stalled project. The government has dissolved the Board of Trustees and is reviewing the next steps for the site.
The Minority Leader also criticised what he described as conflicting government positions on the project and called for broader consultations among stakeholders to determine its future.
