A 12-year-old Nigerian schoolboy died after his teacher lashed him for not doing his Homework
Emmanuel Amidu, a Nigerian child from Simple Faith Schools in Agbara, Lagos State, is said to have died after being flogged by his instructor.
The boy’s father, Akinola Amidu, told reporters that when his son went to school on Thursday, May 12, 2022, he was flogged by a teacher.
He claimed that after the physical punishment, his son began voting and was transported to the hospital, where he died.
The bereaved father claimed that the school administration was covering up his son’s death and protecting Steven, the maths teacher who allegedly whipped Emmanuel for not finishing his assignment.
“I was on leave that Thursday,” he explained. I recall Emmanuel asking for money to buy a new exercise book, so I gave him N500 and gave the rest of the change to his sister.
“Later that day, the school’s administration informed me that Emmanuel had vomited. Meanwhile, this was a youngster who had no health problems when he left home. I had to go to school, and we had to transfer him to a hospital.
“I later realized that the whole event began when their class instructor, Mr Steven, spanked the entire class for failing to complete their mathematics lesson.
“Emmanuel had been using my phone torchlight to complete his assignment the day before, but I needed to get the phone from him and his sister since I wanted to contact the office.” At home, we were having problems with our electricity.
“It was at LUTH when my kid died. Meanwhile, the school’s administration dashed to the Morogbo Police Station in Agbara to report that my kid had died from vomiting.
“How can someone die from vomiting if there is nothing that causes it?” The school’s administration is attempting to safeguard the teacher.”
Akinola, 45, sought the teacher’s arrest and prosecution, as well as justice for the family from the state government and the police.
Rachael, Emmanuel’s 13-year-old sister, told PUNCH that after he was hit, her brother vomited.
“I was contacted by our English instructor since my brother was not feeling well and had not eaten and had been sleeping,” she explained.
“His friend informed me they were beaten for not performing their arithmetic sums, and he was just sleeping and vomiting after that.” Adetayo Akanji, the school’s principal, described the occurrence as unfortunate.
“I was there on Friday when Emannuel died, and it was awful that it happened this way,” he remarked. Steven flogged the entire class for not doing their math homework, but not with the goal of injuring anyone. Following a few hours, he (Emmanuel) leaned over his desk and began vomiting, after which water was thrown over his head.
“When he began vomiting, the proprietor summoned me, and we drove the youngster to the hospital.” In fact, the father joined us at LUTH, where he and I were racing about trying to have him prescription medications. But by the time we returned, he had given up. The incident was reported to the Morogbo Police Station by our school.”
The event was not reported, according to Benjamin Hundeyin, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer. “I contacted the DPO of the Morogbo Police Station, who confirmed that no such crime had been reported,” he continued.
