GPRTU to announce new transport fares Today

The Ghana Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has stated that it will release new public transportation tariffs on Monday, October 24, 2022.

The union claims that the ongoing increases in the cost of petroleum products at different fuel pumps have made this necessary.

At major fuel pumps, diesel and gasoline are currently selling for over GHC 15 and GHC 13, respectively; transport operators claim this is reducing their profit.

A discussion about the fare adjustment between the GPRTU and the Transport Ministry came to a deadlock.

Abbas Imoro, the GPRTU’s industrial relations officer, claimed in a Citi TV interview that the union has little control over the situation.

“Normally, if we are able to conclude, we will come out on Monday with a percentage of increment. We will give the passengers a few days to adjust themselves to the new prices.”

“We’ve been very considerate. This would have been the third or fourth adjustment from May. We are all in this country and have seen frequent increments in fuel prices. But we have sacrificed to contain it. But we can no longer bear the cost.”

He also urged passengers to be patient with the GPRTU in order to maintain business as usual.
