Sam George: I’ll reduce Radio Stations to 100 if possible

Minister of Communications, Digital, Technology and Innovations, Sam Nartey George, has expressed deep concern over what he describes as the reckless and excessive allocation of radio frequencies in Ghana. Speaking on Channel One TV’s The Point of View on Monday, April 14, he warned that the current saturation—with over 600 frequency authorizations—poses a serious threat to the country’s media landscape and sustainable broadcasting.

“We’ve abused the assignment of frequency authorization. A country like Ghana should not have more than 600 frequencies. It’s damaging to media business growth,” he said.

Sam George emphasized the need to rationalize the number of radio stations, suggesting fewer than 100 should operate, with performance-based Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to retain authorization. “Many frequency holders are not producing original content—they simply repeat syndicated political shows,” he added.

The Minister disclosed that 57 radio stations risk suspension for violating broadcasting regulations, clarifying that the move is to enforce compliance, not suppress press freedom.

Three of six recently suspended stations have already met conditions for restoration, and the Ministry plans to tighten regulation to ensure the radio frequency spectrum is reserved for serious, compliant broadcasters contributing value to Ghana’s media development.
