Play Ghana initiative is not feasible – Kwabena Kwabena
Musician Kwabena Kwabena believes that the #PlayGhana initiative launched by Ghana’s Creative Arts Council and Ministry of Tourism is impractical.
He believes that money rules the entertainment world, and that the initiative will fail because most DJs who are expected to play Ghanaian songs are on the payrolls of Nigerian artistes.
“There are several DJs in this country who are on the payrolls of Nigerian artistes. When we go for promotions, the DJs say the Nigerians pay very well. Same with our influencers; they pick them from Ghana and give them good treatment, so why will they not do the work for them?” he said.
“It’s a flimsy argument to claim that musicians don’t retweet when they tweet. Nothing else matters except money. When Nigerian artists release new music, they have people in Ghana who distribute it.
“I’m not sure how thorough their research was, but the reality on the ground is that it’s not feasible.” The 80/20 rule is impractical. I believe that investment and appeal will be successful. We should inform influencers that it is a nationalistic act and that they should change their charges in favor of the Ghanaian act.
