“Nogokpo and Antoa Nyamaa” to Combat Corruption in Ghana – Dr. Akumperigya

Dr. Rainer Akumperigya, Secretary to the Constitutional Review Committee, has proposed the use of traditional spiritual systems such as Nogokpo and Antoa Nyamaa as powerful tools in the fight against corruption in Ghana. Speaking at a recent committee meeting, Dr. Akumperigya suggested that public officials should swear their oath of office based on their personal spiritual beliefs to promote accountability and integrity.
“If you’re Catholic, swear by the cross. If you’re a traditionalist, then swear by the gods of Nogokpo or Antoa. That way, there’s equality and sincerity in office, rooted in personal conviction,” he stated.
He emphasized that many Ghanaians fear traditional oaths more than legal repercussions, suggesting that invoking such traditional deities could deter corrupt behavior more effectively than court systems or disciplinary committees.
Dr. Akumperigya questioned why traditional spiritual practices aren’t yet part of the vetting process for public officials, highlighting the powerful influence of cultural beliefs on behavior.
With corruption continuing to undermine governance and development, he urged the country to consider unconventional anti-corruption methods, including the use of Ghana’s revered traditional deities to instil fear and moral responsibility in public office holders.
