Manaf Nurudeen saves two penalties as 9-man Ghana defeat Chile
On Tuesday, June 14, 2022, Ghana defeated Chile on penalties to finish third in the Kirin Cup 2022.
Despite playing with nine men, the Black Stars were able to hold their South American opponents to a goalless draw.
This was after Alidu Seidu and Mubarak Wakaso were both red-carded in the second half as the game extended into penalty shootouts.
Goalkeeper Manaf Nurudeen, on the other hand, put in an outstanding effort in the shootout to help Ghana win 3-1 on penalties.
In the match against Chile, Otto Addo made a few changes, bringing back Nurudeen, Benjamin Tetteh, Andre Ayew, and Felix Afena-Gyan.
In the first half, the Black Stars showed little intensity, but in the second half, they stepped up their game and took the game to Chile.
Benjamin Tetteh and Andre Ayew both put the Chilean goalkeeper to the test, while Afena-Gyan came close on several occasions.
Ghana’s momentum, though, was sapped when Seidu Alidu was sent off following a tackle that was adjudged by VAR as dangerous.
Wakaso was the next to be shown a red card after receiving a second yellow card for ostensibly harassing the referee.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, Otto Addo’s side held on to take the game to penalties, where they triumphed 3-1 in the shootout.
Beating Chile sees the Black Stars finish the Kirin Cup on a high following last week’s disappointing 4-1 defeat to Japan.
