Mahama’s 120 days not bad, but don’t overhype it – Prof Adei

Economist and former Rector of GIMPA, Professor Stephen Adei, has described President John Dramani Mahama’s first 120 days in office as commendable, but warned against excessive praise at this early stage.

Prof Adei acknowledged the significant progress made so far but stressed the importance of sustained delivery and cautious optimism.

“As much as I congratulate John on his 120-day, and anybody who is objective would say he has done very well, we hope he will be able to continue and sustain it, make corrections of any lapses, and deliver the Ghana we want,” he told Joy Fm.

Prof Adei pointed to historical lessons from the first term of former President Nana Akufo-Addo, which began with high public approval before gradually losing momentum and support.

“We must be very careful over praising John in 120 days. Because in the first term of Akufo-Addo, I think that he performed very well and then everybody’s hopes were dashed…. and I think that Akufo-Addo’s government in the second term did so badly,” he noted.

While praising Mahama’s early achievements—including fiscal discipline, justice sector reforms, and social policy rollouts—Prof. Adei emphasised that lasting change requires consistency, integrity, and the ability to admit and correct policy missteps.
