Iraq Football Association Requests Withdrawal from World Cup 2026 and Proposes Suriname as Replacement

The Iraq Football Association (IFA) has formally asked FIFA to withdraw Iraq’s qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, citing ongoing security challenges and war‑related circumstances that make participation unsafe and logistically unfeasible.

In a letter dated 31 March 2026 addressed to FIFA’s president and members, the IFA expressed gratitude for FIFA’s efforts in promoting global football development.

The association highlighted that Iraq had successfully qualified for the World Cup, marking a historic achievement reflecting years of dedication from players, staff, and supporters.

However, due to the current situation, the IFA believes it cannot compete responsibly or safely in the tournament.

In the same request, the IFA proposes that Suriname be considered as the replacement for Iraq’s vacated slot. The association describes Suriname as an emerging football nation with growing international potential and a worthy representative on the global stage, noting its development, talent pool, and recent progress make it a strong candidate for the opportunity.

The IFA trusts FIFA will review the request in line with principles of solidarity, fairness, and global football development, and remains committed to the growth of the sport.
