Govt extends sim registration with Ghana card to September 30th

The countrywide sim registration deadline has been extended by the Ministry of Communication to September 30.

Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, the sector minister, said this during a news conference in Accra today.

The program will be extended until September 30 in order to mark the anniversary of its start and give us a full year. Sims won’t be able to use services if they haven’t registered by the end of August, she said.

This extension was granted as a result of various Ghanaians’ complaints regarding the Ministry’s deadline of July 31.

In a previous interview, Mrs. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful stated that the administration would not extend the deadline.

The Minister advised Ghanaians and everyone else who hasn’t registered their SIM cards to take advantage of the current opportunity before it expires on July 31, 2022.

At a National Communications Authority (NCA) forum in Kumasi, she made this statement.

Since the deadline of July 31, 2022, won’t be extended, she used this chance to implores everyone who hasn’t registered their SIM cards to do so.

She added that the exercise will ultimately assist Ghana in creating a reliable and secure SIM Card database.

Most people access their internet through their mobile devices. We must make sure that they do so safely. We must make it difficult for the criminals who hack our systems and defraud us through multiple online channels to operate, and this SIM registration exercise is one of the steps the government is taking in that regard. Essentially this stresses the point that this exercise will enable the establishment of a subscriber database with integrity to keep the consumers safe from scams and fraud,” she noted.

SIM card re-registration initially ran from October 1, 2021, until March 31, 2022. However, because the majority of Ghanaians had not yet received their Ghana cards, the Ministry extended it until July 31, 2022.

The only national identity card that can be used to register a SIM is the Ghana card.
