EIU, Fitch projections of Mahama win in 2024: We’re not surprised – NPP

The main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) is expected to win the general elections in 2024, according to reports from two think tanks, but the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has expressed that it is not concerned.

Ghana’s 2024 presidential election is expected to be won by former president John Mahama, according to research firms Fitch Solutions and Economist Intelligence Unit, both based in the UK.

While the EIU predicted that the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), of which Mr. Mahama is the flagbearer, would likely overthrow the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Ghana, Fitch Solutions predicted that the NPP, led by Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, who was chosen as flagbearer on November 4, 2023, is unlikely to hold onto power in the country’s general elections the following year.

The EIU primarily blames poor public services, dwindling living standards, and a lack of job opportunities for its prediction.

According to Fitch Solutions, Mr. Mahama is expected to defeat Dr. Bawumia by almost 48% in the swing regions. The party, headed by Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, thinks it has what it takes to win the national general elections in 2024, especially at the polling place level. The NPP’s director of elections, Mr. Evans Nimako, said the party takes the reports as advice and is not shocked by them.

He emphasized that the NPP is certain of winning the 2024 elections and that it has a sizable presence at polling places.

Mr. Nimarko drew attention to the fact that while comparable projections were made in other nations, like Nigeria and Kenya, the actual results were different.

Following reports from Fitch and the Economic Intelligence Unit projecting an NDC win, Nimarko restated the NPP’s resolve to galvanize its constituency and guarantee victory in the next elections.

On Saturday, November 18, 2023, Mr. Nimako responded to reports from the Economic Intelligence Unit and Fitch that indicated the NDC would win the general elections in 2024. He made this comment while appearing on Kumasi-based Sompa FM.
