Court Grants NIA Go-ahead To Proceed with Ghana Card registration in the Eastern Region

According to news feed coming in this morning, Accra high court has given a green light to the National Identification Authority to go ahead with the registration in Eastern region which was interrupted following an interlocutory injunction filed by two gentlemen, Kevon Mark-Olive and Emmanuel Akumatey Okrah.

The injunction application was based on the directive given by the president for all mass social gatherings to be banned. However, according to an explanation given by the Presiding judge, Justice Anthony Oppong, the president’s directive does not necessarily restrict businesses from operating but rather demanded that, all business operators should observe the set precautionary measures.

Based on this judgment, the NIA is free to continue with the Ghana card registration in the Eastern region. The main problem here is how the very critical general public will take this news. Earlier on, when it came out that the NIA was doing everything possible to resume operation, many people got angry because of the rate at which the virus is spreading.

To many of these critics, any attempt to proceed this registration will mean that the upcoming election is being prioritized over the lives of the people. The NIA has so far defended itself by stating clearly that, the numbers they handle at the registration centers can be well managed with lives duly protected.

The final decision lies in the discretion of the residents of Eastern Region. They have the option to either stay at home and protect themselves as earlier directed or go to the registration centers if they believe the NIA have what it takes to guarantee their safety.
