A secular state shouldn’t build cathedrals – Kwesi Pratt to Mahama
Ghanaian journalist and editor of The Insight Newspaper, Kwesi Pratt, has expressed concerns about President John Dramani Mahama’s recent comments on the National Cathedral during the Thanksgiving service organized by the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Speaking on Good Morning Ghana with Randy Abbey monitored by MyNewsGH, Pratt emphasized his agreement with the directive to investigate the funding of the National Cathedral project.
“I cannot have any quarrel with his announcement that investigations into the funding of the project will be carried out. That is a directive from the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice, and his government is expected to carry out that investigation,” he remarked.
However, Pratt was critical of the president’s suggestions about the state’s involvement in the future construction of the cathedral. He argued that the opposition to the project was rooted in the secular nature of Ghana’s state, which many believe should not be involved in constructing religious monuments.
“Many people thought that a secular state had no business building any religious monument. If some churches want to build a cathedral, let them go and build it themselves.
“We should not get involved,” Pratt asserted, pointing out that the NDC previously benefited politically from this stance.
He further expressed disappointment, noting, “The suggestion that the cathedral can be built with the involvement of the state is troubling.
He does say that it should not be funded by the state, but funding is not the only involvement of the state. There are other things the state can do to facilitate it.”
