The Second Deputy Minority Whip, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, has issued a strong call to President John Dramani Mahama, urging him to act decisively to address the state of lawlessness in the country following the recent general elections.
Addressing journalists, Shaib criticized what he described as a failure by the President to contain violence and lawlessness, pointing to the actions of alleged thugs believed to be affiliated with the ruling party.
“To President Mahama, we call on you to take immediate steps to call your party’s thugs to order,” he stated firmly. “You cannot pretend to be unaware of all the lawlessness and violence in this country.”
Shaib’s comments come against a backdrop of rising tensions as reports of intimidation and violence continue to surface, with concerns about the safety of Electoral Commission officials and other stakeholders in the electoral process.
He emphasized the need for swift intervention from the Ghana Police Service, the Inspector-General of Police, and the Election Security Taskforce to restore order.
“The EC officials and all the stakeholders in this electoral process must be protected. They are Ghanaians just like us,” Shaib stressed, underscoring the critical role of security agencies in ensuring the integrity of the democratic process.
The Minority Caucus also issued a warning about the potential consequences of inaction from the President and security agencies.
“We hereby serve notice that should the president, who is the Commander-in-Chief, fail to take steps to protect ordinary citizens, we, the Minority Caucus, shall protest through lawful means and withdraw our cooperation in Parliament,” Shaib declared.
