Kwame Jantuah calls for action, not blame, in energy sector
Lawyer Kwame Jantuah has raised concerns about Ghana’s stagnation in energy sector development, particularly in the gas industry.
Speaking to Naa Dedei Tettey on Starr FM and monitored by MyNewsGH, Jantuah emphasized the urgent need for solutions to secure the country’s electricity supply and called on the new energy minister to prioritize action over blame.
“I didn’t understand why they told WAPCo to defer to January,” Jantuah said, referring to the decision involving the West African Gas Pipeline Company.
“They haven’t told us why they made that decision. Was it financial or a capacity issue? If we knew, we could better understand the situation and address it.”
The gas sector is vital to powering Ghana’s electricity grid, particularly in areas like Tema, where gas-fired generators are a cornerstone of energy production.
Jantuah expressed frustration at the lack of progress in the sector over the past eight years.
“It shows that we haven’t made progress in exploration to production in eight years,” he observed. “Gas is the main fuel for our electricity, especially in the Tema enclave where we fire our generators.”
The lawyer underscored the critical importance of adequate financing for electricity production, stressing the need for contingency planning.
“We need to make sure there is adequate financing for electricity, with enough funds to buy stock on standby,” he said.
Turning his focus to the newly appointed energy minister, Jantuah urged a shift away from political blame games and toward collaborative problem-solving.
“The new energy minister should not engage in the politics of blame,” he stated.
“He must focus on solutions, work closely with the finance minister, and carefully plan the financing needed for the sector to ensure there is adequate power throughout the year.”
