The Ghanaian Parliament’s power supply could be cut off by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) on February 21 due to an unpaid debt that exceeds GH¢23 million.
The reported amount of debt poses a significant operational challenge to ECG and affects its ability to meet power producers’ demands.
The power outage is a component of the ECG’s larger pattern of vigorous debt collection actions.
Following an aggressive collection campaign that began last year, the ECG has successfully disconnected a number of public and private entities from the national grid.
This development follows the Monday, February 19, darkness at Accra Academy Senior High School, which was brought on by unpaid debts to the ECG.
Academic and residential activities at the prestigious educational institution were disrupted by the abrupt cutoff of power.
There was no quick fix for the problems that the blackout presented for both teachers and students.
But since July 2023, Accra Academy SHS has finally had power restored over GH¢500,000 in past-due bills.
Speaking anonymously, a teacher at the school described the sudden power outage as the saddest day of his 31-year teaching career and expressed his deep disappointment in an interview with Citi News.
He bemoaned the terrible circumstances, stressing that even instructors living on campus with pre-paid meters had their power cut off.
