Deputy Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mark Okraku Mantey, has shed light on the misconceptions surrounding the revenue generated by the tourism sector.
In a recent interview with Agyemang Prempeh on Power Entertainment, Mr. Okraku Mantey acknowledged that many people hold the belief that money generated by tourism directly benefits the government.
Contrary to popular belief, the Deputy Minister made it clear that the government does not receive direct monetary gains from tourism.
He emphasized, “Money from tourism does not come directly to the government.
However, the reality is that the government’s income primarily stems from taxes imposed on various elements of the tourism sector, such as hotels, restaurants, and levies collected by the Ghana Tourism Authority.
“Money from tourism does not come directly to the government. The government does not receive direct money from tourism. A lot of people feel that money from tourism goes directly into the government’s coffers. The only thing the government receives is tax on the various elements of tourism, such as hotels, restaurants, and levies collected by the Ghana Tourism Authority,” he said
