30 million SIM cards registered- Minister announces
About 30 million SIM cards are registered and active at the moment, while 7.9 million are banned. However, 2018,000 cards have been reconnected since the deactivation deadline, according to Ursula Owusu Ekuful, Minister of Communications.
Regarding the registration requirement, the Minister suggested that anyone having trouble can enlist the assistance of other reliable friends or family members to assist them in registering until they can secure a Ghana card. The Minority has objected to this idea, arguing that even in such a situation, the law requires that both parties possess the Ghana Card.
Ursula Owusu-Erkuful, the minister of communications and digitalization, has insisted that the process of deactivating SIM cards won’t be prolonged because it has already been done so seven times for everyone.
The Minister stressed, however, that people with sincere concerns should contact the National Communication Authority (NCA) for assistance. The Minister was speaking to Parliament on a number of matters pertaining to the ongoing SIM card registration.
Sam George, an MP for Ningo/Prampram and the Deputy Ranking Member of the Communication Committee, argued that the procedure had been unfair and urged the Ministry and the NCA to put an end to the deactivation process.
