Burna Boy does not like the Afrobeats tag. He says he does not understand why all sounds from Africa should be lumped under one descriptive name.
Speaking on The Million Dollar Worth of Game podcast, he noted that he would rather want to be associated with Afro-fusion, a blend of all African rhythms.
“For me, it is like the way you are going to say Nas is an R&B singer because he’s from America or Whitney Houston was a rapper because rap is the most popping thing now in the USA. I can’t accept that because I’m not a rapper. So now in Africa, when you talk about music, the first thing they say is Afrobeats,” he said.
Afrobeats (not Fela’s Afrobeat without the “s”) is a word couched by some Africans in the diaspora including Ghanaian DJ in the United Kingdom, DJ Abrantie to describe music from Africa.
With time, music almost all the biggest music charts in the world have introduced Afrobeats charts. Awards schemes have also tailored categories to suit this development.
Burna Boy, for the past years, feels Fela’s Afrobeat is so original that it should not be corrupted into anything else.
“For me when I started the Afro-fusion thing, it was like my music was not like any other artiste,” he said.
