We won’t congratulate anybody who murders to gain power – NDC to Akufo-Addo

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has criticized President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for expressing dissatisfaction with his key rival, NDC candidate John Mahama, for refusing to congratulate him on his victory in the 2020 general elections.

In an address ahead of the fifth Constitution Day commemoration, the President emphasized the importance of unity and tranquillity. He also revealed that he had yet to receive a congratulatory message from the NDC’s flag bearer.

While supporting John Mahama’s refusal to congratulate President Akufo-Addo, NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah accused the president of inciting violence to gain power, which led to Mahama’s position.

“Ladies and gentlemen, Nana Akufo-Addo should rather be implementing the recommendation of inquiry which he himself set up that interrogated the actors and victims of the Ayawaso Wuogon by-election violence; and not be worried over congratulation from our flagbearer. We will not congratulate anybody who murdered Ghanaians to secure power, we will not.”

He added that the president, Nana Akufo-Addo, must ensure that representation in Parliament for Santrokofi, Akpafu, Likpe, and Lolobi (SALL) is restored for disfranchising them in 2020, instead of a mere apology.

Asiedu Nketiah further accused Akufo-Addo of lacking commitment to addressing electoral-related violence.

“He must be called out to abandon his partisan commitment, which he has expressed publicly, that he’ll do whatever is in his power during the remaining time in office to hand over power to the NPP successor. He wants to choose this successor, not the people of Ghana in whom the sovereignty of Ghana resides; we are saying no way.”

  • NDC threatens to sue EC over limited voter registration

NDC threatens to sue EC over limited voter registration

The Director of Legal Affairs for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Godwin Edudzi Tamakloe says the party’s Legal Directorate will consider exploring legal means to challenge the legality of the Electoral Commission’s decision to hold the upcoming limited voter registration at its district offices.

The Commission last week announced the commencement of a limited voter registration for eligible Ghanaians who turned 18 years after the 2020 registration exercise and other eligible voters from September 12, 2023, to October 2, 2023.

The NDC argues that if the EC is allowed to go by its plans, most of the new voters will be disenfranchised.

Mr. Tamakloe says his team will challenge the legality of the exercise.

“The EC is applying the same law to only limit the registration to the district offices. We will explore all the available legal channels to ensure that we will get an outcome that will allow the elections to be more decentralized. We want to ensure that all our MPs are duly protected within the confines of our law, and we will definitely do that,” the Director of Legal Affairs for the NDC said.

Seven political parties in the country on August 21 were unhappy with the decision by the Electoral Commission (EC) to restrict the upcoming voter registration exercise to its district offices.

According to the political parties, such a move would disenfranchise a number of Ghanaians who have attained the voting age.

They want the commission to instead open up the process for the exercise to be conducted at the electoral areas.

President Nana Akufo-Addo encouraged party supporters to be optimistic and maintain their faith. Following the Assin North by-election results on Tuesday resulted in the party losing its attempt for a parliamentary seat.

After the voters chose their next representative in parliament by casting ballots, Nana Addo is optimistic that Assin North would become blue once again.

He thanked the Chairperson and Members of the Electoral Commission for conducting a peaceful, free election in a Facebook post.

“Yesterday, Tuesday, 27th June 2023, Ghana’s democratic credentials were strengthened even further, following the conduct of peaceful and credible elections in the Assin North by-election.

I congratulate warmly the Chairperson and Members of the Electoral Commission, again, for a job well done. The security services are to be commended for maintaining law and order during the holding of the elections; as is the media for providing extensive coverage before, during, and after the elections.

I congratulate the National Democratic Congress on its victory yesterday.

I urge members of my party, the New Patriotic Party, to keep their heads up, recognizing that, in a democracy, there are winners and losers, and that we live to fight another day. We once held the Assin North seat, and I am confident that, sooner rather than later, Assin North will be blue again.”

The Assin North by-election, according to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and party supporters, served as a wake-up call that will cause the party to conduct itself rationally in future elections.

The NPP’s candidate Charles Opoku lost the parliamentary seat bid to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, James Gyakye Quayson who polled 17,245 votes representing 57.56%, against 12,630 votes garnered by opponent Charles Opoku, representing 42.15%, on Tuesday, June 27, 2023, with the Liberal Party of Ghana’s (LPG) candidate, Sefenu Bernice Enyonam, polling a paltry 87 votes, representing 0.29%.

The party was confident in reclaiming the Assin seat but was swayed by the opposition’s NDC candidate.

“While we had diligently worked towards reclaiming the Assin North Parliament, seat, we respect the decision and judgment of the people of the Assin North constituency,”

Supporters were invited to send their thoughts and suggestions to the national secretariat for consideration and potential action, according to a statement from the party’s general secretary, Justin Koduah Frimpong.

“We urge our dedicated party supporters to submit their comments and recommendations to the national secretariat of the party for consideration and possible implementation”.

The letter also expressed congratulations to the NDC for winning the by-election and to its parliamentary candidate.

“The Party extends its warmest congratulations to the National Democratic Congress and the Member of Parliament-elect for the Assin North Constituency on their electoral victory,”

  • Cut off my manh**d if NPP wins Assin North seat – NDC’s Agyenim Boateng

Cut off my manh**d if NPP wins Assin North seat – NDC’s Agyenim Boateng

The Bono East Regional Deputy Youth Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Obeng Agyenim Boateng has vowed that should the NPP wins the upcoming by election at Assin North, his manh**d should be cut off.

The Vociferous NDC youth leader who was speaking on Dwaboase on TV XYZ Thursday morning stated that despite the intimidation and vote-buying tactics of the governing NPP, the NDC is confident about retaining the seat with James Gyakye Quayson as its candidate.

“As we have dedicated our efforts and resources towards a successful campaign. Our team’s unwavering determination, strategic planning, and strong connection with the community have positioned us for success,” he said.

The Young politician opined that the NDC is committed to representing the interests and aspirations of the people, and they will work tirelessly to address their concerns and bring about positive change.

‘’With the support and trust of the electorate, nothing will hinder our path to victory. The love for Hon. Quason at Assin North, and the NDC if higher than expected due to the good works of our candidate’’

He added that “even if the NPP try all their electioneering misconduct, trying to impose their unqualified candidate on the people of Assin North, we are going to win the elections regardless.”

To him, the fact that the NPP’s candidate, Charles Opoku, is not a registered voter in the area is a big blow to the NPP.

Samuel Duah, a panel member on the show representing the NPP disagreed with him, arguing that the candidate could vote in the election.

But in sharp rebuttal, Obeng Agyenim Boateng vowed that, “If the NPP candidate is able to vote dirung the by-election in Assin North, chop off my manhood” and added “I am offering myself for you; if the NPP wins the by-election, come and chop off my manhood.”

Meanwhile, the Central Regional Chairman of the NDC, Professor Richard Asiedu has said they are unfazed by the intimidation tactics of their opponents.

He told Akora Kofi Darko on Dwaboase on TV XYZ that they are prepared adequately and will ensure that the NDC wins the seat for the people of Assin North who have been denied a representation in Parliament for a long time.
