GFA sacks Black Stars coach Chris Hughton

The executive council of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has announced that it has decided to terminate the appointment of the Black Stars’ coach, Chris Hugton with immediate effect.

Ghana conceded twice in stoppage time to throw away a two-goal lead to draw with Mozambique and almost certainly exit the Africa Cup of Nations.

The Black Stars looked to be cruising into the last 16 thanks to two Jordan Ayew penalties, one in each half.

But Geny Catamo pulled one back from the spot 91 minutes before Reinildo Mandava’s header broke Ghana’s hearts.

Mozambique finished bottom of Group B, while Ghana failed to qualify to the next round.

A statement issued by the GFA on Tuesday (23 January) said ” The Executive Council has also taken a decision to dissolve the technical team of the Black Stars.”

“The Ghana Football Association wishes to announce that Chris Hughton has been relieved of his duties as head coach of the senior National team with immediate effect.”

“The Ghana Football Association will in the coming days provide a roadmap on the future direction of the Black Stars,” the GFA statement said.

For two consecutive African Cup of Nations tournaments, Ghana’s Black Stars have failed to advance to the competition’s last 16.

After being eliminated by Cape Verde in the previous edition in Cameroon, Ghana is on the verge of exiting the 2023 edition, which is currently taking place in Cote d’Ivoire.

The Black Stars only earned two points out of a possible nine in a group that included Egypt, Cape Verde, and Mozambique.

Ghana needed a win to advance to the next round, but they drew with Mozambique in the final group game, sealing their fate.

This has triggered Black Stars supporters on social media, who are demanding that Chris Hughton be fired immediately as coach.

It is part of a major shakeup, and Mr Hughton is looking forward to the undertaking as he looks forward to overturn the fortunes of the national team.

Olele was added to the technical setup of the Black Stars during the tenure of former Head Coach CK Akonnor, together with other former players, to run the Black Stars.

However, Chris Hughton does not find his skill set top-notch enough, and so, apart from hiring a new video analyst, he looks forward to replacing Richard Kingson as the goalkeeper’s trainer.

“Maybe, having been with the team for almost a year as technical advisor, I suspect Chris Hughton may have analysed the technical team and, therefore, knows its inadequacies which may have informed his recommendations to strengthen the technical department as he takes over,” a source at the GFA is quoted as saying.

“From what I have heard, the coach is looking at bringing in his own goalkeeper’s trainer and he has made recommendations to that effect.”

Chris Hughton will be unveiled by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) as head coach on March 20, 2023.
